I hope she is overwhelmingly voted out of office!
Ledyard Town Clerk Rose Marie Belforti, who has gained national attention for her opposition to issuing licenses for same-sex marriages, now faces a write-in opponent in November’s election.
Ed Easter, a registered Republican from Aurora, confirmed Friday that he is going to try to unseat Belforti because she refuses to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. Belforti had been running unopposed.
“I don’t think an elected official should be able to pick and choose what they do,’’ Easter said. “If she were a member of PETA would she not issue hunting licenses? Would that be OK?’’
Belforti has cited her Christian religious beliefs in refusing to abide by the state’s Marriage Equality Act. The law, which was enacted in July, requires town clerks to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Failure to comply is a misdemeanor.
